A Brief History of Dinosaurs in Sichuan, China
People have been finding dinosaur fossils for thousands of years. In fact, there are references to “dragon bones” found in Sichuan, China over 2,000 years ago, which were most likely dinosaur fossils.
The first discovery of dinosaurs in Zigong, Sichuan, China goes back to 1915 when Lounderback, an American geologist, collected a section of a femur and broken tooth from giant carnosaur dinosaur. This great discovery was the first dinosaur discovery of Sichuan.
Today, China has excavated and named over 170 dinosaur species (about one sixth of the world’s total!). This country has become a prime location for fossil hunters and can now claim global supremacy in the area of dinosaur discoveries. China is now dubbed the world’s “Dinosaur Power” and a destination for international palaeontologists, some of whom have started calling it the “Age of the Chinasaurs“.
